Without Landfills for Waste, Communities Face Issues Regarding Odor and Public Hygiene
The changing way of life has caused Baan Sa and Muang Mai Subdistricts in ChaeHom District, Lampang Province – an area that formerly enjoyed natural abundance and harmony in its agricultural way of life – to face issues regarding the lack of waste landfills which resulted from daily consumption in the communities. Moreover, locals have seen their happiness diminished as waste that cannot be legally incinerated caused problems regarding odor and public hygiene.
Uniting the Community to Sort Waste and Add Value to Waste Materials
Change was initiated in the community when SCG’sThe Siam Cement (Lampang) Co., Ltd. in the Cement-Building Materials Business implemented circular economy in line with SCG Circular Way which focused on utilizing resources to its full potential from manufacturing, usage, to returning it to the manufacturing process in order to be transformed into new materials. In 1997, SCG established the waste management program for the first time at Baan SaSubdistrict with the determination to teach locals about the importance of sorting waste and adding value to leftover materials through various projects such as the Recycled Waste Bank project, Waste Management Center project, Communities Without Hazardous Waste project, and Bio-Fermented Water project. Then, SCG expanded its project to the nearby Muang Mai Subdistrict.
From New Ideas to New Life: Finding Value in Every Piece of Trash
With the cooperation of all stakeholders, a new way of life was introduced to the Baan Sa and Muang Mai communities. Today, every piece of trash has its own value and can be reused. The communities have become model communities for efficient waste management where the amount of waste had decreased while locals now enjoy a cleaner community which is free from odor. Villagers also generate more income with the help of everybody in the community through initiatives ranging from sorting waste where locals would gather food waste, leaves, and grass inside an area marked by woven bamboo in order to make natural fertilizer; utilizing leftover materials such as car tires and plastic bottles to plant salad greens for their families and trade the rest among the community; to raising awareness and sharing knowledge about waste management to locals in the area, especially students.From now on, SCG and the communities will continue to implement circular economy in order for the communities to become model circular economy communities in ChaeHom District, Lampang Province.
