OCEAN WASTES & LAND LEAKAGE: THE GLOBAL ISSUE

As we know, the marine environment has become today’sglobal issue that raised so many concerns for water resources management towards sustainable in the future. The waste leakage from land into the ocean in many areas, is due to the lack of good waste management infrastructure and the lack of the right business model. The leakagesspread across the globe, have caused a lot of environmentally chain-reaction problems, and has endangered more and more marine wildlife species across oceans. Many global organizations, governments, private sectors and NGOs have joined forces in many forms of associations. Also many solution technology providers including startup companies have brought in new technology and have integrated new business concepts to help solving the issue.

OUR ROLES

As one of many responsible corporates in Thailand and South East Asian region, SCG isobligated to take some actions in preserving and protecting our water resources and biodiversity to ensure sustainability for our future generations. Any company either large, SME or small, could also have roles to help solve this overwhelming issue. Working together in harmonic collaborations where everyone could step in to play one’s role by bringing in one’s strength, will create big and true impact as this issue not only has touched upon environmental impact but also will trigger on both economical and societal impacts, eventually. So, collaborations are opened in any form that we would cooperatively plan and act to improve the situation effectively.

OCEAN CLEANUP: THE NPO WITH THE LARGEST CLEANUP MISSION IN HISTORY

To protect and conserve our water resources and marine life, we may need to understand the magnitude of problems based on scientific proof of data and try to find comprehensive way to solve it. With help of the Netherland Embassy,SCGwere introduced to “The Ocean Cleanup”, a Dutch-startup company from the Netherlands who has taken challenging actions on cleanup our ocean with their engineering capabilities and innovations. Those includea waste collection toolcalled “Interceptor” in river and another in ocean, garbage detection system with AI, and river line research methodologies. Their team are all very passionate with a real intention on solving the ocean waste issueand have already started projects in Indonesia, Malaysia, Dominican republic and soon to be in Thailandunder the cooperation with the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, Ministry of National Resources and Environment. With great ambition, they aim to initiate many more projects in more than 2000 rivers across the globe.

ACTIONS TOGETHER

We strongly believe in the power of collaboration that we could create better opportunity to preserve our environment for young generations to come. With help of the Netherland Embassy, Ocean Cleanup, DMCR, SCGand some other partners have initiated a small project collaboration in river wastes researchto understand the leakage origin, its problem, and to help transform and repurpose some wastes into valuesvia circular economy concept. We hope to openup for more new partners who have the same mission in water resources preservation to join force. Together, we shall expand the scope and createsome protective measure to preserve and protect our water resources by establishing river waste management system that could help closing the tap with impactful systematic solutions for rivers in Thailand, for our world ocean, and for self-defenseless marine life that are the important food origin of all the world food chain.
