SCGC develops chemical innovations that not only address lifestyle needs but also improve people’s quality of life, drive the economy, and open up new and endless possibilities. Thanks to the diverse properties of plastics and polymers, they can be used as raw materials for manufacturing a wide range of high-quality items around us. SCGC places a significant emphasis on High Value Added Products & Services (HVA), which accounted for 35.8% of total HVA sales revenue in 2021. SCGC focuses on developing such products to meet five global megatrends, including infrastructure changes due to urbanization, the shift to electric vehicles, the transition to clean energy, healthcare, and the development of green innovation, such as green polymers and low-carbon innovations.

Green plastic innovations

One of the strategies that SCGC has consistently focused on and developed is the development of green innovation, such as green polymers. The company intends to increase its green product portfolio to one million tons annually by 2030. The polymer resins were developed on the basis of the circular economy under the brand SCGC GREEN POLYMERTM, plastic solution series that is environmentally friendly, encompassing four areas:

  • REDUCE. Our innovative SMX™ Technology makes it possible to improve the strength of high-quality PE resins while minimizing the use of primary microplastics. The polymer resins produced with this innovation will help minimize material thickness and weight without sacrificing product performance. Importantly, it plays a crucial role in lowering energy consumption during transportation in addition to reducing GHG emissions.
  • RECYCLABLE. Design for Recyclability. SCGC has developed a solution for producing packaging that uses only PE or PP to create recyclable packaging solutions to facilitate effective recycling while preserving the qualities of the contents. In April, SCGC introduced a new air permeability film coating to replace multi-material structures tested and certified by an international standard RecyClass, an organization in Europe that offers Recyclability Certifications and Recycled Plastic Traceability Certification for plastic packaging. It contains Recyclability Evaluation Protocols and scientific testing, the findings of which are incorporated into regularly updated Design for Recycling guidelines in accordance with European rules.
  • RECYCLE. The household plastic waste is mechanically recycled with qualities improved by SCGC’s proprietary formula. It transforms used plastics into High Quality Post-Consumer Recycled Resin (PCR) grade HDPE and PP with traceability standards compliant with the Global Recycled Standard (GRS). The polymers under this solution can replace the use of virgin raw materials by 25-100%. The product highlights include gallon bottles using PCR HDPE grade for Sunlight products, green lubricant gallons using PCR HDPE, PAO and Shokubutsu packaging, and Palmolive shower packaging using High Quality Odorless PCR Resin by SCGC.
  • RENEWABLE. Biodegradability and use of renewable resources. SCGC has developed bio-compostable compound resins with unique properties to form films to produce biodegradable bags for household and industrial applications. This compound innovation has been certified by the world’s leading institution, DIN CERTCO in Germany, as being industrially biodegradable without leaving environmental residue. It is also capable of contributing to a complete and eco-friendly recirculation process.

Increase competitiveness with digital technology

Advancements in digital technology in the petrochemical industry are emerging swiftly and continually. SCGC is aware of this and has embraced these emerging innovations to expand its business’s capabilities and increase available options for addressing our challenges.

SCGC has developed the Digital Commerce Platform (DCP), an integrated platform that provides end-to-end data visibility to our customers in their ordering journey. The platform can respond to customers’ inquiries in real time, allowing customers to make instant decisions. It can also leverage data collecting of customer voices for analysis to develop new products, resulting in enhanced customer service and a 70% reduction in consumer waiting time.

In terms of production optimization, SCGC has developed machine learning to forecast market conditions which assist in making better decisions regarding the sourcing of raw materials to match customer demand. Furthermore, it adopts a digital twin or simulation, robotics, and the Internet of Things to optimize business processes and maximize reliability. Regarding cybersecurity, SCGC has devised measures and adopted numerous cybersecurity technologies to protect the personal information of all relevant parties. It also regularly promotes cybersecurity awareness among its employees.
