ENERGY TRANSITION SOLUTIONS

for Achieving Net-Zero by 2050

Global warming and the steady rise in energy prices are major concerns for different sectors and consumers, and many large organizations are thus working to take care of the environment alongside their business operation to reverse global warming, especially by achieving net-zero carbon emissions. For this reason, clean energy, such as solar power and wind power, has grown in popularity, especially among residences, industrial estates, industrial plants, and large buildings, such as hospitals, hotels, and shopping malls.

1. SCG has adjusted production to increase the use of alternative energy.

SCG has increased the use of renewable energy and low-carbon energy sources, such as biomass energy from agricultural waste, refuse-derived fuels (RDFs) from cement production, waste heat, and solar power, to reduce the consumption of coal and electric power in cement production. In addition, SCG is the first company in Thailand to begin deploying electric vehicles (EVs) and 60-ton electric vehicle mining trucks in a cement mine, in line with the green mining practice.

2. SCG Solar Roof Solutions: A residential solar rooftop system

Residential

SCG Solar Roof Solutions has developed products and services to directly address changing consumer preferences and behaviors. Among these is the home energy management system, which meets all types of residential electricity utilization demand and elevates the home for smart living by incorporating technology into daily life.

• On-grid SCG Solar Roof is a system that makes use of both electricity from the grid and the electricity generated by the solar panels and is thus ideal for those using electricity during the day. Because it is not equipped with a batter, the power produced can be readily used or sold to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). Before installation, a permit must be obtained from EGAT first; SCG will be responsible for the entire permit request process.

• Hybrid-grid SCG Solar Roof is a system that draws electricity from the power provider as well as the power generated by the solar panels and stored in the battery. Any excess power generated by the solar panels is stored in the battery for use at night, thus giving users around-the-clock access to clean energy and a source of power in case of emergency for vital electrical appliances in their houses.

SCG Solar Roof Solutions are offered along with an installation service and are tailored for the utilization of each household. They also come with a comprehensive range of other services, from roof health checkups to design optimization, all the way to a free solar permitting process. The installation is carried out by a team of professionals using the Solar FIX technology, which requires no roof drilling and thus eliminates leakage issues, as well as an excellent after-sales service through the 25-year lifespan. SCG Solar Roof Solutions are thus perfect for those looking to cut their monthly electric bills with clean solar energy. In addition, users will have access to SCG SOLAR application, which enables them to view their power use behavior, the amount of power generated, and the expenses they have saved in real time.

4. Circular Plus Solution: Post-consumer Material Management Solution and green solution for Sustainable Resource Maximization and Environmental Conservation of industrial sector

This solution for renewable resource management supports the industrial sector and society in advancing towards the net-zero goal and promotes resource maximization. This solution contributes to the realization of a circular economy not only by transforming agricultural residues, community waste, and industrial waste into valuable green materials and green fuels, such as RDFs, fuels, and industrial rock and sand but also by pushing forward a low-carbon economy and low-carbon product development project for the industry and generating revenue for communities.

• Green Waste Management Solution From an industrial waste disposal service using a co-processing incinerating system – one of the high eco-friendly methods at present – evolved an integrated management system that helps reduce waste at the source and increase value. The management solution helps transform industrial, residential, and agricultural waste and by-products into materials for reuse in order to generate value and ensure waste management that is safe for the environment.

As part of the Circular Plus solution, SCleco offers general and industrial waste disposal services. It has also elevated waste management with the circular economy to process industrial waste that can still be utilized into feedstock for other industries.

This includes alternative fuels and alternative materials for use in five cement plants nationwide, Maptaphut Eco Plant Service, SRIC’s refractory product manufacturing plant, and green partners.

SCG has also been working with the Siam Refractory Industry Co., Ltd. to study the use of recycled materials in the production of refractory materials. Thanks to research on raw material properties, recycled material quality enhancement processes, and a quality management system, a wide range of recycled can be utilized, including used refractory bricks, broken sanitary ware, spool insulators, as well as molds from latex glove manufacturers, the latter of which were studied collaboratively with Sri Trang Gloves, without compromising the quality of the finished product.

With Circular Plus, certain refractory products can now be manufactured with over 30% of the materials made up of recycled materials that have undergone improvement. SCG has been working to expand this initiative in order to promote waste material and industrial waste management with the ultimate goal of maximizing economic utility and advancing Thailand’s environmental management.

• Green Fuel Management – Management Solution for Agricultural, Residential, and Industrial Waste into Green Fuels:

This solution transforms waste from agricultural and industrial sectors and communities into alternative fuels for use in cement plants in place of coals. An example is energy pellets made from agricultural residues, such as rice straw and cane leaves, thus reducing agricultural burning along with any PM 2.5 and greenhouse gases otherwise generated. SCG also seeks to establish a network of fuel quality improvement technology hubs (waste-to-value hubs) across areas that are raw material sources.

As Thailand enjoys conditions highly conducive to agriculture and multiple crop rotations in a year, farmers traditionally remove agricultural residues, such as cane leaves, rice straw, and corn husks, in preparation for the next crop by burning these materials, which contributes to the issue of air pollution and PM 2.5 as well as global warming. This is not to mention waste from communities that cannot be recycled or put to other uses as well as existing waste in landfills.

In response, Circular Plus has joined hands with the government sector and communities to collect and buy agricultural waste and to transform it into biomass pellets, also known as energy pellets, which serve as an alternative fuel. To further enhance their value, innovation has been applied to boost the heating value, resulting in Green Biocoal or Green Black Pellets. These innovations not only help reduce burning and PM 2.5 emissions in agricultural areas and generate increased income for farmers but also give the industrial sector, including cement plants and manufacturing plants, an alternative source of energy made from agricultural waste, which expand green fuel supply stability for them and reduces the emission of carbon dioxide, which is a leading culprit of global warming. In addition, Circular Plus has collaborated with the government sector and local private businesses to purchase RDFs produced from community waste that has undergone quality improvement.

In the next five years, Circular Plus aims to reduce agricultural burning in over 350,000 rai, replace the use of 200,000 tons of coal, reduce carbon emissions by over 400,000 TCO2, and generate over THB 500 million in recurring income.

Another goal is to use community waste as solid fuels in place of 300,000 tons of coal, which can reduce carbon emissions equivalent to growing 30 million trees.

• Green Material Management Solution

This solution consists of industrial materials that have undergone a circular resource management process. This includes the quality improvement of waste and by-products for reuse and waste-free raw material management. An example is Smart Green Mining, in which EV trucks as well as unmanned truck systems and technologies are employed in mine management to achieve 100% recovery, beginning from within the mine and later expanded towards network members. The first-ever EVs of their kind to be deployed in Thailand, the 60-ton EV mining trucks help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, and PM 2.5. Another example is a construction rock and sand marketplace platform, which optimizes resources and logistics as well as fosters a network for the quality development of construction rock and sand alongside environmental management through the Circulo network. The platform helps customers better control their quality and costs by, for instance, introducing materials to concrete producers in accordance with the quality of each concrete formula, such as Strength, 180, and 240.

Our goal is to create a supplier network consisting of more than 39 mines by 2027.

In addition, PFA that meets quality and functional standards has been utilized as an alternative raw material for cement and concrete production.

SCG has also been working with various leading companies to research how to transform by-products from the use of alternative fuels in cement production into a raw material in the agricultural industry as a high-potassium chloride soil conditioner that can be used to treat soil with low pH value and boost productivity.

• Green Refractory Management Solution

The Siam Refractory Industry Co., Ltd. is a world-class producer of refractory materials for high-temperature industrial furnaces, such as metals, ceramic, cement, natural rubber, and electricity, under the SRIC brand. The company leverages its 69 years of experience in high-temperature technology and quality management of various raw materials to initiate circular resource management.

Industrial operators have transitioned from merely purchasing refractory materials towards implementing a systemic refractory material management, encompassing production, use, and recovery of materials to maximize utilization and prevent any wastage from the manufacturing process. The initiative also enhances efficiency, reduce costs, and strengthen Thailand’s overall industry. The company has also developed a low-carbon refractory material using a chemical bonding technology instead of high heat in the production, which helps reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 80%. In addition, SCG has joined an heat battery company - RONDO ENERGY, USA for zero-carbon industrial heat. There is also opportunity to collaborate on co-development of Refractory which is a core-material to perform heat storage with renewable electricity, cutting energy cost and eliminating emission which have now been deployed for real-world use in the industrial sector.

Our goal is to produce and sell more than 12,000 tons per year of low-carbon bricks by 2027.

In addition, we have leveraged our knowledge on refractory material development and design to support the development of the Rondo Heat Battery so that it will have low cost and can utilize renewable electricity without releasing carbon in order to generate consistent heat to durable refractory bricks. The stored heat would be converted into hot air, steam, or hot water at the desired temperature or a maximum of 1,500 °C. Recharging and discharging can occur simultaneously from the renewable power generator both outside of and within the power grid, thus contributing to reduction of carbon in industrial processes and energy demand around the clock.
